Multimedia project

Business Card....starting point!

Wrap Up

I have really enjoyed this online English class.  It allowed for a lot of freedom and that is exactly what I need to be motivated to learn.  I think this is one class I would have enjoyed in the classroom.  It was somewhat difficult to work in a group on this last project as far as communicating.  I think Professor Butts would have been great to experience in real life, considering he was a much better professor than many I have encountered so far.  But, I am lucky I got to be a part of this.  The writing assignments have helped me recognize how I best communicate and has helped me to improve my writing skills. Thanks for making this a great summer class!

Reality

When I think about reality, I think of what I actually experience and how it effects me.  Whenever something has a direct effect on me physically, mentally, or spirtually, it becomes real to me.  My reality, however, could be different than the next persons'.  I don't think reality can have a solid definition.  The faith I have in a higher being, God, is the truest form of reality to me, but to an atheist that is not reality at all.  All the rhetoric surrounding us; magazines, tv shows, websites, movies, books, influences us greatly.  Most of us do allow these influences to dominate our lives, which makes it our reality.  We wear what they tell us to wear, and we do what they tell us to do.  So, reality to each person is what they think they know, that may or may not be true.  We all have free will to think what we want, say what we want, and believe what we want.  We can choose our own realities.

Organization

Beginning with showing the strong bond and friendship between two CIA partners, this trailer initially introduces this as a spy movie.  It is when they find out they are dating the same girl that their relationship turns into a challenge and a competiton.  Pretty girl, two guys competing for her, they are best friends-->disaster.  They say they are going to let her decide and continue to both date her, but they come up with crazy ploys to turn her against one another.  May the best man win.

It is a typical romantic comedy film that is bound to end up with the two guys realizing that nothing should come between their friendship the way she has.  It starts with everything being ok, a problem (the girl) presents itself, they plot thickens as they compete for her, it concludes with everyone being happy and their friendship resolving.

NOTE:  I am not actually sure what happens in the end, but ideally this is what would happen!

Duke Kahanamoku

The Picture I took:
Duke Kahanamoku Statue

Picture of the Internet, so you can see it better:

This statue is located on Waikiki Beach on the Island of Oahu.  With arms in an open position the statue is very welcoming and very gallant.  You can tell he had some type of authority to the people of Waikiki.  The surf board behind him and his impeccable physique shows you that he was an athlete.  Then reading the sign in front you learn that he was a great Olympian swimmer, winning gold medals, a sherriff of the town for many terms, and was also named "Father of Surfing"in Oahu. He was also a local hero, saving eight men using his surfboard, from a fishing boat that was capsized in a heavy surf.  His wife had the 9 foot statue built after he died at the age of 77, in honor of his legacy!

Questions for Paper

What types of struggles do disabled, handicapped, or special needs people deal with pertaining to body image?

How can society limit the success of these people with their constant admiration of only the smartest, most athletic, and physically able beings?

Web Page Design

Sucks:  http://www.pombredens.com/

You can't see this too well from the picture, but this is a very sparkly page.  What they are selling is somewhat ambiguous.  Then you notice the title of the tab; it is Exotic Toy Pomeranian Puppies for Sale.  Then you see Jesus's face glaring at you from each side of the site.  You scroll down to find "We're in the POM of His hands," with a picture of Jesus and little Pomeranians around him.  There is yet another sparkly something in the center of this picture, which is just very odd.  The SALE signs are tilting on each side of the credit card logo, which is very tacky, and not pleasant to my eyes.  The colors are unappealing and the font in the description of the site is hard to read.  This is overall a crappy site, and you can tell that someone very amateur designed it.  It reminds me of a Myspace page with all the crosses and the sparkles. It is so unorganized and just plain creepy.

Doesn't Suck:  http://www.nikebetterworld.com/

This site is awesome.  It is very simple and easy to navigate.  You have a good looking shoe with an intriguing little blurb, "Deadly by Nature,"  that draws your attention without being overbearing to the senses.  It has an "about" link and a "product" link that directs you to what you are looking for.  The colors are contrasting which also draws your attention.  It includes nice photographs of normal people using the products, which makes the product relative to us.  This site is great, and more especially when comparing it with the Pomeranian site!

Cover Story

This magazine cover clearly depicts a torn relationship between Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis.  You are first drawn to the rip between Johnny and Vanessa's picture, symbolizing that they are broken up.  The designers of the cover do this so that you know what is going on without even reading any text.  Then you notice the headline, "Johnny's Broken Heart" and you can read the little short blurbs underneath that lure you into finding the article and reading all about their broken relationship. They play up the heartbreak of Johnny, making us think the breakup was Vanessa's doings.  An onlooker said that Johnny was recently seen at a hotel, and they said, "Johnny looked forlorn.  He sat at the bar, nursing his drink, listening to the piano player, he seemed to be lost in his thoughts."  Being together, but never married, for 14 years, Vanessa found she was not happy in their life together. A friend of Johnny's said, "They'd have blazing fights, Vanessa would take her frustrations out on him." This always lead to Johnny drinking too much.  They have tried to keep things as normal as possible for their children.  Now we know, after reading the article, the answers to the questions the cover headline posed to us.  We know what went wrong, what they fought about and how they have worked things out to the best of their ability.

Free Write

Free Write

I have had a struggle coming up with a topic, so if it changes, so be it; that, after all is the writing process.  I started out thinking about bullying because it is such a hot topic.  That lead me to think about how mass media, parents, and even peers can influence body image.  If I use this topic it will focus specifically on the United States, because that directly affects me.  We see so much in magazines, movies, tv shows, commercials, billboards, Facebook, about how to look better, lose weight, get bigger muscles, etc.  There is also a big difference when comparing a girl and guy's self image.  There is tremendous pressure on both sexes, but is one worse than the other?  Then you have pressure from parents and peers.  Whatever clique  you roll with, may or may not have an impact on they way you look, but most likely it does.  If you are an athlete, you are expected to look like an athlete.  Parents want the best for their children, in most cases, so if your mom or dad notices you have been slacking in the health department, then they will probably tell you so.  It is an individual matter of consciousness, some people are going to take a comment from their parents harder than others.  How is this wrong or right to be influenced so greatly, especially from media that can be controlled?   Time's up.

Concept Map

I have emailed you about this, and I didn't want to do anything extensive if I was on the wrong track.  Due to the time difference, I just wanted to go ahead and post something just in case.  I will re-do this assignment tomorrow if need be!

Does it Suck?

DOES IT SUCK??

Republican Elephant
No, it doesn't suck.  It appeals to me because although I am not super into politics, I was raised very conservative.

Obama
No, he doesn't suck.  While I consider myself more conservative, Obama is our President and I respect his authority and pray for him every day.

Harry Potter
No, it doesn't suck.  Harry Potter is awesome.  The books are great and I was sad when I finished the series.  I'd love to visit Harry Potter world one day!

Apple
It doesn't suck.  I love Apple, I have an iPhone and an iPad.  Although I have a bad habit of losing/breaking my phone, I continue to go back to the iPhone every time.

Star Wars
It sucks.  I am not a fan of science fiction, I think it’s dumb.

Facebook
It doesn't suck.  I love stalking people on facebook.  I don't post anything really, but it helps me remember birthdays and I can see everyone's pictures.

McDonald's
It sucks.  I love it and I hate it.  It's so tasty but so gross.  I can devour a Big Mac, fries and a large sprite with ease, but afterwards I regret it big time.

Clemson University
Doesn't suck.  I love Clemson, it is an awesome atmosphere. I love the football, the town, and the whole experience.

Lady GaGa
She sucks.  She tries too hard to be different.  She succeeds, but people like that annoy me.  Some of her songs are catchy though.

Justin Bieber
He sucks.  I just don’t care for his music, he sounds young and I think he is at his peak.

Soduku
It sucks.  Too much working of the brain.  Too many numbers.

Avatar
It doesn't suck.  I liked the graphics, which may have been because I saw it in 3-D.  It was enjoyable.

XBox 360
It definitely doesn't suck.  I play it all the time when I am bored.  It can entertain me for hours on end.

American Idol
It sucks.  It has run it's course.  It is time for it to be cancelled.

Glee
It sucks.  It is too dramatic and silly for me to enjoy.  I'd rather watch ESPN or SportsCenter.

Marlboro
They suck.  The who cigarette manufacturing company sucks.  They know how addictive it is, and yet they continue to bring people to their deaths.

Guns
They don't suck.  They are a great way to protect yourself.  I am all for having a gun license and carrying one in my car.

Abortion
It sucks.  I hate that many women feel the need to get them.  I understand that I will never be in that position and I do not like to judge, I just wish that some people would take other alternative paths, such as putting their child up for adoption.

Dog in Clothes
It doesn't suck.  I love dogs.  Dogs in clothes are hilarious.

Writing is Easy

"Writing is Easy"

When I have to write a paper I have to sit down in a fairly quiet, peaceful place with no distractions.  The balcony of my hotel in Hawaii, for example, is a great place to write (my view is pictured above).  I begin by writing down all my knowledge of whatever the topic may be.  It is usually a list and very unorganized.  After I do that, I organize my list by relevance and by projected paper structure.  I have to take many breaks when I write because I get very antsy and my mind does not focus for long periods  of times.  I agree with Steve Martin that many times I am thinking, "why am I writing this?" which makes what I am writing horrible to read.  I really think good writing is a talent.  I don't always mind writing but I do not consider myself to have writing talent.  I'd much rather be doing something else, most of the time! But, you do what you have to do!

The Dilemma of Plagarism

I promise to not plagiarize, as a student loyal to Clemson University and to the trust of my professors.  Plagiarism is a huge temptation with the stress of many classes and assignments.  It is tempting to even the most moral of people.  Cheating is a way of life for some, and others have to push this temptation away constantly.  Sure, it is the easy way out to "Wikipedia" a topic and click copy, then paste. Then, of course, re-word the sentences to “make it your own.”  But this is not the right way to do things.  It is not a challenge to your brain nor is it using your originality or creativity.  Not to mention that it is stealing someone else’s hard work and not even giving them credit.  I was raised to be honest and I will strive to do so in all aspects of my life.

Crocodiles

What's the Deal with CROCODILES...
Crocodiles are majestic, powerful, and amazing creatures.  Crocodiles are pretty awesome because they are basically present-day dinosaurs.  They come from ancient lineage and have not changed much over time.  There is no doubt why they continue to live; they are big, burly creatures and run the food chain game.  There was once a Crocodile longer than a school bus and weighing about 10 TONS; this was, of course, 100's of millions of years ago, but how spectacular is that?!   Any animal that can put the fear of God into a human being is cool in my book.  Sure, they can be dangerous, but if you stay out of their way, they will stay out of yours!
__________________________________________________________________________________

Crocodiles are ridiculous looking, silly, and lame creatures.  Come on, crocodiles are some crazy looking monsters.  They are not cuddly, have sharp teeth that are visible even with their mouth shut, and have beady eyes that make your skin crawl.   Their legs are unproportionally short compared to their large bodies.  The way they run is just silly, unless you are the one being chased, I suppose.  They are very unpleasant to look at with their plated armor covering their scaly bodies. They also kill and hurt innocent creatures! (see above picture) The Crocodile is one creature that I would not want to have a run-in with!

Advertisments

This is one of those ads that make you think twice. The author of this ad is, of course, Proactiv.  The quoted "Just ask your boyfriend what to do.  Oh, that's right, you don't have a boyfriend." is the message communicated by Proactiv to the audience. This message is very straightfoward, blunt, and pretty harsh.  So, the audience is us (or anyone reading it), but the more specific and targeted audience are females, especially those who don't have boyfriends, and have acne.  The message is meant to be humorous, but targets low self-esteem in young girls.  I do not think this ad, however, will be very effective to this audience.  It is just going to hurt someone's feelings.  It is ultimately stating that you can't have a boyfriend if you have acne.  This message is condescending and focusing on outward beauty, with no regard to inward beauty.  The goal is to convince someone to buy Proactiv, not make them cry theirselves to sleep at night.  I suppose this ad may work for someone who can "take a joke", who can see the supposed humor. It definitely catches your attention, and I guess that is the ultimate purpose of the harsh words.

About Me and What I Hate

Hey, my name is Jake Nicolopulos! I am 20 years old and a freshman.  I am from Anderson, SC. I absolutely hate mowing grass.  My dad owns a property management company and periodically I have to help him with the upkeep of the property yards.  I am always on mowing grass duty, it sucks.  But, on a more serious note, the past couple years of my life have been very difficult.  I had a massive left brain stroke in December of 2009.  I have been through much intensive therapy and I have had the great opportunity to attend Clemson, beginning last fall.  I had a full football scholarship, but due to the stroke I am unable to play anymore. Clemson chose to honor my scholorship, regardless!  I miss football, but through my struggle I have learned to really appreciate the little things in life.
